Jack Feels Big!
Jack Feels Big is a brilliant collection of short illustrated stories that help kids learn how to express their emotions.
“Having the names for their feelings is a powerful tool. It allows kids to better grapple with their emotions and communicate them to others.”
– Adam Millen, author
Jack feels Big is written by engineer Adam Millen, and beautifully illustrated by Matt Haworth.
“Taking [Jack Feels Big Vol.1] from crazy idea to reality was a huge learning experience, a heap of work and incredibly rewarding.”
- Adam
Each story focuses on a particular feeling. First the feeling is given, not only using the English word, but also in Te Reo Maori and NZSL (New Zealand Sign Language).
“We had fun learning the signs for emotions. The storylines around each emotion were clear and easy for my class to relate to.”
– Trish Palmer, Primary Teacher
Then there is a simple story where the young protagonist, Jack, is experiencing a situation which is immediately familiar to most kids. The children can completely relate to what Jack is experiencing, and as Jack learns how to express and tackle his feelings, so do they.
“It works wonders! The kids are completely hooked and ask for more... Definitely a great book to keep working with.”
– Sarah D’Almeida, Early Learning Reliever
At the end of each story there is a reflection page, which provides discussion prompts for teachers and parents to use to talk with children about their own experiences with that emotion.
“We are loving it in our class! Nicely written, great format, easy for the kids and teachers to use!”
– Rochelle Ward, Primary Teacher
The first volume of Jack Feels Big explores feeling overwhelmed, persistent, frustrated, brave and lonely. Adam has hopes to release a second book, Sophie Feels Big, which will feature a new main character with five new feelings and stories.
